서북각루

서북각루(西北角樓)
1796년(정조 20) 창건 - 1975년 복원
서북각루는 화성 서북쪽 요충지에 세운 감시용 시설이다. 화성에는 모두 4곳의 각루가 있다. 서북각루는 팔달산으로 오르는 경사지에서 성벽이 휘어진 곳에 자리 잡아 서북쪽 일대가 한눈에 들어온다. 아래층에는 군사들이 머무는 방에 온돌을 놓았고 위층은 마룻바닥으로 만들었다. 지금은 사라졌지만 사면에 널빤지 문을 달고 구멍을 내서 적을 감시했다.
Northwestern Corner Pavilion
A corner pavilion, called gangnu in Korean, was built on the high ground of the fortress to watch the surrounding area and to be used for leisure. The name comes from the fact that there is one such pavilion at each of the four corners of Hwaseong Fortress.
The Northwestern Corner Pavilion, located on the western side of Hwaseomun Gate, commands a panoramic view of the areas to the north and west of the fortress. The pavilion also includes a small room for soldiers with a traditional Korean under-floor heating system called ondol.
