남군영(南軍營)
1794년(정조 18) 창건 - 2002년 복원
화성행궁의 정문인 신풍루 좌우에 남군영과 북군영 건물을 짓고 약 100명의 군사가 교대로 행궁을 지켰다. 남군영은 국왕 친위 부대인 장용영 외영 군사들이 주둔하는 건물이다. 장용영 군사는 왕이 화성에 내려올 때는 물론 평소에도 화성을 보호하는 역할을 했다. 봄, 가을로 두 번 시험을 치러서 수석을 차지한 군사에게는 곧바로 관직을 높여 주는 등 특별한 혜택을 주었다.

Southern Garrison
This is one of the two military garrisons in this temporary palace. The royal guard of King Jeongjo was stationed here. In 1785, King Jeongjo reorganized the military system and established the royal guard. A unit of this royal guard was deployed in Hwaseong Fortress in 1793, and a garrison building was built on each side of the main gate. King Jeongjo established the royal guard to symbolize his powerful royal authority, but the royal guard was disbanded in 1802, two years after the king’s death.
